Footbridge conntecting Windsor with Eton

Discover Eton

Visiting England’s Famous Public School

There’s much to see in Eton beyond its notable college namesake, however many journey to the area to catch a glimpse of the renowned education centre that is the second oldest of its kind in the nation.

Established by King Henry VI as an all-boys school in 1440 with the aim of providing opportunities for an education like his own, 70 boys from underprivileged backgrounds, with some as young as five years old, were initially housed and educated at Eton free of charge - becoming known as the King’s Scholars.

Primarily taught Latin until Greek was added to the timetable in the early 17th century, prayer and religion were also integral to school culture - emphasised by the building of a chapel on the college grounds – with the college’s focus today centred on a rounded curriculum including sports, music and drama.

Prominent alumni include a diverse list of politicians and writers such as George Orwell, while princes William and Harry also went to school here.
